Chocolate city. The unofficially official nickname of our great nations capitol. For those of you who don't know, dc received its nickname because of being so saturated with beautiful black faces. It was widely known during the mid 20th century as somewhat of a mecca for the elite in black art, society, and business. This vibrancy in black culture served as a magnet and more and more blacks migrated to the area. right through the 90's, the demographic of dc remained steadfast in it's supportive embrace of dc's moniker. According to the 2000 census, over 60% of the dc pop was black. Well, its 2008 and A LOT has changed * ....one day while working at the dc chamber of commerce, I got a phone call from what sounded to be a very politically correct, fairly conservative, white soccer mom type. Her son was doing a report on dc for school and while doing research they discovered that dc's nickname is chocolate city. She (sounding like she thought she and her son may've been labeled as racist if he included this fact) called for verification, which I proudly gave! She sounded a little nervous. I thought it was a little funny.......* Anyway, I propose that the new unofficial nickname for dc should be:
WHITE CHOCOLATE AND MACADAMIA NUT CITY by and large, blacks are getting pushed out of the city by the real estate development industry. Most of the black folk in the district do not have what it takes to afford living in this city. So as developers search for more prime slabs of concrete to tear up, beautifully architectured sprawling developments sardine can themselves onto city blocks and some poor older black couple who worked tirelessly while raising their kids, to be able to buy that rowhome and don't have anywhere else to call their own are forced out to make room for the macadamia nuts and white chocolate. While many black natives of the district are being forced to migrate due to injustices and performance issues within local government and the education system (which I will blog about at a later time), there are a lot of gen x, talented tenth black folk moving into the new dc. I refer to them as white chocolate because amongst many of our own (unfortunately) we are considered as sellouts trying to be white. Well you know what? If me simply trying to live a life rich in quality, not self-confined to the routine misery and drama of the hood and have the means to leave my son with even a small piece (of the american dream) makes me white, then i'll be that! And I'm sure that all my tasty white chocolate morsels out there will concur with me on this one... Although it really saddens me that there are some black people, STILL, that hate on their brothers and sisters who strive to better themselves and the black community as a whole. But alas, that too, is for another blog.
White people, I love you. Many of you are in my circle. I even live with one of you. But I will not hesitate to say that we (black people) think y'all are just a little nutty! And you know what? Its ok! Our differences are what gives society texture! A lot of nuts are various shades of brown. But the macadamia nut is as white as they come! And everybody knows that white chocolate and macadamia nuts together help make for a tasty treat! So pass the word on, its official! The unofficially official nickname for dc in the 21st is white chocolate and macadamia nut city!
